FROM SERRARA TO THE MUD: through the stone houses

It starts from the municipality of Serrara (at the Bracconiere restaurant) and continues to enter a wild and fascinating landscape on the west side of the island (Forio),

up to the forest of Frassitielli, a terrace of dense acacias.
In the wood the locust trees shade rocks covered with moss, lichens, and wild fennel.
Continuing along the path you dive into the Falanga wood; here reality meets fantasy. In fact, in this chestnut wood it is possible to find the typical holes (the snow pits) and the shelters dug into the tuff boulders precipitated by Epomeo, as a result of tectonic settlements (the so-called Stone Houses).
The crossing in the woods continues until Pizzone, where the sudden lack of vegetation announces the presence of fumaroles, secondary volcanic phenomena, traceable in different areas of the island and evidence of a volcanic activity still active on our island.
The descent to the valley is once again immersed in a forest, this time of holm oaks and heathers in perfect Macchia Mediterranea style, and leads up to Via Crateca in the Fango area, also known as Via dei Carri, which played an important role in the production and trade of alum isolates in the past.
